ABOUT US

Underage rugby caters for children from 5 to 18 years of age and breaks down into a few main categories that give children an opportunity to ease into the game at a level that is appropriate to their age. These are Leprechaun, Mini and Youths. The spirit of the Robin is something that we have worked on over the last number of years engaging with parents and siblings to create a “sense of Club” where everyone is encouraged to get involved, giving as much or as little time as they may have to give. This “sense of Club” has been recognised by the Munster Branch when awarding UL Bohemian RFC “Mini Club of the Year 2019” and by the IRFU through our Club’s hosting of the Aviva Mini Tournament for the last 6 years.

Leprechaun Rugby

This program for rugby development is targeted at the younger child starting from 5 – 7 years of age and is all about the child and their enjoyment with the sport, and to introduce them to a wonderful game in a safe, non- contact and controlled environment.

Developing the child’s ABC’S (Agility, Balance, Coordination, Speed) and the concept of running with the ball in hand and passing to a team mate. We always welcome new members of any age to join our Robins!

Mini Rugby

Many children only take up the sport of rugby at this stage, which is targeted at children from the age of 8 to 12 years of age. We include the new children with the ones that would have been with us from the previous years, at their respective age grade, as we find the more experienced player helps develop the less experienced player.

As the children progress through the years, different elements of the game are introduced with set piece (scrum and line-out) starting with small teams of 8 on small pitches, played across the width of a normal pitch. We put our core focus on the player’s skills development at all times.

We do not have any winners or losers at this stage. Just participants, having fun! With full inclusion for boys and girls, with teams mixed equally with players of all levels of talent and ability.

Youth Rugby

Youth rugby takes our underage players from U13’s to U18½. It is at this stage that a player gets the first introduction to the full game of 15 a side and into standalone teams. Also, at this stage we separate Boys and Girls, into stand- alone teams. The boys teams compete at U13, U14, U15, U16 & U18 ½ , while the girls teams compete at U14, U16, & U18 ½.

It is at Youth level that rugby becomes more competitive with structured league and cup competitions. At UL Bohemian RFC the emphasis is very much about developing the player, improving his or her skill levels, a better appreciation of the game and its laws, respect for team mates and the opposition which is a core value of rugby union, while at the same maintaining that enjoyment for the game of rugby and what it has to offer. The aim is to provide an excellent rugby environment and help our players transition from Mini to Youth and on to the Senior ranks.

We are renowned countrywide for our Annual U13 Pat Lawler Memorial Tournament running since 1984. But we don’t like to keep this to ourselves and we have toured extensively all over the island from Cork to Belfast and Kilrush to Dublin. Even travelling to London Irish in the UK, Racing92 in Paris and Biarritz in France, with teams of all ages, playing in Blitz, Festivals of Rugby, Tournaments, Leagues & Cups. Singing our anthem “where the red red robin goes bob bob bobbing along ”.

Aviva Mini’s Rugby Festival

The Aviva Mini Rugby Festival is one of the many events that our underage players experience during their time with UL Bohemian RFC, being the club of choice by the IRFU, and hosting this provincial festival at our grounds for the last 6 years in a row. These festivals create important non-competitive, enjoyable environments for underage mini players to play against other clubs in the region.

It’s safe to say that Sunday mornings from September to April in Annacotty is something special. With up to 600 children taking to the field for training, blitz and games. The atmosphere is made all the better with siblings and parents lining pitches cheering the players on and enjoying the spectacle that is Bohs on a Sunday.

Squads will start to train twice a week and some gym work (age appropriate) is introduced, we also start to talk to players about diet and mental fitness. But the big focus is player development, not all and only a few will progress to play for Munster with fewer going on to wear the green and represent our country. But, what we want to see is players playing all their club rugby from 5 years of age all the way up to senior with UL Bohemian.

We would be delighted to welcome you and your family into ours. Training is every Sunday morning from September to April (with some exclusions, bank holiday weekends & Christmas – New Years) from 9.00am to Noon. Please feel free to pop along and give it a try as we start you on your rugby journey from age 6 to 6 nations!
