Our President’s Welcome
Presidents Message for the Centenary Season 2022/23
At the commencement of this season during which we celebrate the first hundred years of our existence, we remember all the pioneering Red Red Robins, who since the foundation of our club on 15th May 1922, have contributed to the making of the thriving organisation we have today. Their efforts, which were motivated by a love of rugby football, have been entwined in our Limerick Heritage which has been passed down to us through the decades. While the ethos of our club has always been to promote a competitive spirit in the pursuit of excellence, we have a proud tradition of fostering the social aspects of the game with a history of fun and friendships down through the years.
It is an honour to have been elected President for this milestone season a century after my grandfather Jack O’Sullivan was elected the first President. I very much look forward to welcoming visiting teams and engaging with the rugby fraternity generally in the course of our Centenary celebrations.
All our teams are enthusiastic about being back playing rugby again, and I wish them every success for the 2022/23 season. These teams, ranging from our senior men’s teams, the two senior women’s teams, U20’s and all underage teams (boys and girls) from minis to under 18’s all face the forthcoming season with confidence and enthusiasm. The thriving underage section aspires to building on the successes of last season. In particular our senior men’s & women’s teams carry our hopes in the AIL, the Men’s 1st XV in their efforts to gain promotion from Division 2A & the Women’s 1st XV in their efforts to win the Women’s AIL.
As a club we are committed to serving the community and to strengthening our links with our hinterland, the University and our wider base. We would wholeheartedly welcome volunteers in all sections of our club. Additional hands would spread the workload and enable us to enhance the service we provide. We are proud of our record of introducing people to the game at the various levels and have provided many players, who have represented Munster, the other provinces, Ireland and the Lions a with distinction over a period covering several decades. Since its inception our Academy has been particularly successful in this regard. Top class management and coaching teams are in place at all levels for the forthcoming season. Subsequent to the forming of our women’s team in 2001/02, UL Bohemian RFC have been a significant force in Irish and Munster Women’s rugby, achieving outstanding success, while producing significant numbers of international and provincial players. We have been seen as the standard bearers of the senior game in the province for many years. We are currently actively engaged in developing and expanding our underage Girls rugby section.
Healthy finances are crucial to our club’s well being. Our thanks are due to our main sponsors, the pitchside sign sponsors, to the organisers and subscribers of our 400 Club Draw, the Annual Golf Classic, the IRFU “Your, Your Country Draw”, our Calender and the other fundraising for the underage or other sections of the club. This year being our Centenary Season we are also seeking a hundred Patrons to subscribe to help defray the printing costs of the Centenary Book.
During the off season our grounds at Annacotty have been a hive of activity, resulting in a significant upgrading of our facilities. Considerable work has been carried out at our two floodlit pitches. This included the installation of higher specification more eco friendly floodlights, involving the renewal and upgrading of lamp standards as required. All five pitches have been re-seeded and are in great condition. In respect of our indoor amenities, considerable layout alterations and decorative work has been carried out in the “Yummy Scrum” area. The dedicated team who drove and directed this work deserve our gratitude
It is planned to hold a series of events to mark our 100th birthday, commencing with our Centenary Golf Classic, followed by the launch of our Centenary Book titled “100 Years of the Red Red Robins”, with various other events during the season, culminating in a “Centenary Ball” next May. In the course of our celebrations I hope to meet players, ex players, members, friends & supporters of all generations on a regular basis during the season.
Yours in rugby,
John O’Sullivan
President UL Bohemian RFC
